A typical characteristic of French Protestantism is a deep involvement in education. During the XIXth century, protestants took part in the development of education in France at the time of the Juillet Monarchy, when the first important law promoting primary schools came into effect due to the tireless efforts of Guizot and in the IIIrd Republic, free, compulsory and secular education for all was at last established.
Some Protestants played a crucial role, especially concerning primary education and technical or commercial schools – many charitable institutions and new places of learning were built by protestants.
