It goes without saying that trade and banking are non-religious occupations by nature, but when protestants were involved, over a long period of time, they left their unmistakeable mark. This is due to the fact that protestants had a work ethic peculiar to themselves and also because successful protestant business families intermarried with each other, with the result that their financial situation became even stronger and their business activities more varied. For a long time, the Mallet bank, the de Dietrich and Peugeot factories, the Haviland porcelain factories and Oberkampf tapestry workshops were well known because they made good quality products and also because they were protestant – in fact it was precisely because they were protestant that they were known to make good quality products. Moreover, there were much intermarriage between these successful protestant business families.
