One could say that Protestant literature started with the prominent figure of Jean Calvin (1509-1564) in the mid-16th century, because of the perfectly crafted language in which his religious works were written, particularly his “Institution Chrétienne” (Institutes of the Christian Religion). That made him the precursor of the great 17th century prose writers.
